We identify the decision, failure mode, or capability at stake and write down success criteria before implementation expands. This is usually a one to two week, fixed-fee piece of work with a written recommendation at the end.

2Build the smallest credible proof

Architecture, research, and evaluation proceed together. You get working software and measured results early enough to change direction while it is still cheap to do so.

3Harden what survives, then hand it over
